"Also taken folks to the emergency room to pump out an OD more times than I care to admit."

Well, some people just will be STUPID.

--- But that doesn't mean they all will, or even most.

Not much difference (from a social point of view) between a pill-popper O.D. and someone who drinks themself into a coma or death....

By the way... I ASSUME you were talking about a pill-popper overdose... since 'pumping them out' might not be appropriate for many instances of substance abuse:

nlm.nih.gov

In the case of opiate abuse (heroin, oxycontin, etc.) use of a narcotic antagonist would be well advised.

By the way, maybe you can answer this: Why isn't buprenorphine stocked as a matter of course in every ambulance, and by every EMS unit in the land? It could save most every opiate overdose victim, if given early enough.

Hi Bill,

This is a serious topic and my question is not about rabble rousing. I have had my share of drug induced-suicide rides to the hospital myself. Would there be more of that if the drugs were legal? Doesn't everyone who wants to do them have access? Would slightly easier access increase drug abuse?

I don't know the answer to this question. I think there would be a bump to begin with, but for most the novelty and the realization of the downside would curb the consumption. With drugs, and I include alcohol, people either get it, have a hard lesson to learn or they die.

It would certainly cripple the huge profits from the black market which funds terrorism and all kinds of criminal activity.
