"seems like Murtha himself is also backing away from some of his own heated comments."

As he should. I can understand his frustration with Cheney, to be lectured on the military by someone who got his deferments, justified it with a flip "I had other priorities", and who backs deep cuts in veteran benefits. But it wasn't very wise to vent that frustration.

Murtha has nothing to apologize for. He's right. And he is the #1 expert in congress, far more of an expert than Cheney, who is the one changing his tune. Cheney is now praising Murtha but also calling his proposal cowardly and disasterous. But Cheney has been wrong since the beginning. He has also lied to us from, the beginning. So who cares what he says anymore? His words are only useful now to further hang himself.
