I don't know why the dear Professor should be 'surprised' to discover that little fact on the ground.

It has been that way for centuries.

Alcohol consumption is banned by the Quran. The others are not.

(Actually, I believe that in many Arab countries: Egypt, Sudan, Somolia, Saudi Arabia, etc., Ghat [or "Kat"] is the recreational drug of choice... not the opiates. Just as betle nuts are popular in India.)
