"I think all he's got now are the fearful and the empire crowd."

Probably not. The empire crowd would have preferred a different target than Iraq. Most of the empire crowd would prefer a Julius or a Charles(der Grosser, Charlemagne) instead of a Caligula.

I have to include myself in the empire crowd. The time is over-ripe for an empire. Empires aren't all bad, they provide stability and continiuity. With the collapse of the Soviet Empire, there is a significant vacuum. I am of Cherokee and Czech/German descent. My people valued civilization and continuity. And, as a Texan, I also value independence and libertarianism. So how do I find a center? For me, there isn't a problem. I oppose any power concentration. Big government is just as evil as big business. If I have to choose, I would select big government because it is, at least in theory, selected by the people. Usually I don't have to, it is usually clear whether the people or big business is ascendant. I vote the opposite.

In some respects, I think Niall Furgeson has it pegged. The US is at a unique position in the world. It can be the best thing that can happen for the world. Unfortunately, it has a focus that is way too short sighted. There is something beyond our 50 states. That something is the World.
