"I want a US that minds it's own business, tends to it's own citizens,"

It is an idealism thing. An imperialistic US could be a very positive force for the globe, leading to a truly civilized world. As our political system stands, I'd rather we keep to our own knitting. We aren't equipped to pull it off.

And you are right, we haven't, as a country, decided to do it. I think before too much longer we won't have any choice because the alternatives are much, much worse. But that is a history thing.

And it wouldn't have to be through conquest. We already have an empire in all but name, there is little question that the US dominates culturally and economically the western countries. Until recently, we also led with a great deal of moral authority.

We, as a nation, don't think ahead. We always look for short term gain, little thought is given to things on a decade or multi-decade scale. That needs to change for a variety of reasons.

We differ there then. I want a US that minds it's own business, tends to it's own citizens, and if it spreads democracy, does so by example, by being the "shining city on the hill".

I am with you...
