This week I watched a debate in Qatar shown in the BBC. They discussed if oil was a blessign or a curse.

Two people argue for the blessing and two for the curse.

Oil is a curse, because oil has brought wars financed by oil money which would not have had fought had oil not been available. The money was also funneled outside to pay for terrorism and caused deaths and trouble

A second brought statistics to show that with the gazillion in revenue from oil was used to created pseudo-jobs. Created a docile population forever dependent in government handouts. The money was used to uneconomic and unsustainable development.

It also created countries which are undemocratic in whcib the population hasn;t a saying on how to allocate the wealth.

If compared to other countries, the reasoned, the oil was not a condition for development since other countries developed by creating a resourceful population.

The camp for oil being a blessing said: Without oil, the roads the infrastrcuture won't be there. that is they would not have oil they' be fighting for water o grazing camels, goats and sheeps as they did before.

And if they wouldn't have the M-16's and AK-47's they would slit their throat with daggers.

Other poundered that, you can't call oil a curse if it's misused. The problem is not oil, is the bad management of oil wealth.

In the end I concluded:

Lack of democratic representation allows for governments to allocate the money unwisely.

A royal family hell bent in keeping the grips on the money, will dole out subsidies and pseudo jobs to keep the populace quiet.
