"Down here the gov't cannot legally force a private company to give away its product"

But they can prevent you from trade with other Nations--witness Cuba. Government can permit or not permit trade with foreign nations

We have already established that ALL national gov'ts claim control over international trade. It had the legal right to stop that trade. By not doing so, it is condoning it. There is absolutely no question but that the gov't knew about that trade - -it can't claim ignrance. It provided armed naval escort vessels for the ships.

To "give" anything to Britain without "giving" to Italy or Germany would have violated the neutrality laws of non-intervention. However, if it is simply business for profit it can be rationalized as neutrality.
You ever thought about being an acrobat? Or a pretzel?

"as the Germans correctly noted, it was an act of war"

Yes..it was a violation of International Law to act against a country with whom you were not at war. So Germany quickly declared war.

Quicly? Hardly. The Neutrality Act, which allowed cash and carry, was passed in 1939. The agreement to supply Britain with destroyers in exchange for Carribean naval bases was made in 1940. THAT was a clear act of war.

Germany did not declare war on the US until Dec. 11, 1941.

"The US gov't was (illegally) waging war on Germany without a declaration of war by Congress!"

As of Sept 11, 1941 they were definitely doing more than sell guns...
The sinking of the Greer? Considering the provocation they had been given, it's surprising they didn't do this earlier.

"In case you haven't noticed, WE ARE NO LONGER BRITISH SUBJECTS"

Don't kid yourself! The Brits left Canada over here just to keep an eye on you! And as the second largest country in the world, we don't take no back talk. <g>

WAIT TILL THE ICE MELTS!!!!
