Up here in the north, the October date seems
to make more sense for us.
For farmers, settlers, etc... that would be about
the time that you would have finished digging up
the last of the potatoes, bringing in the squash,
picking the last apples and the sweetest grapes.
It seems like a time of thanksgiving for a plentiful harvest.
Also, it's at the time of year when the last of the
autumn leaves are bright on the trees.
Just seems to go with the idea of a sort of harvest dinner.
