It will be interesting to see what both sides of Congress says about this BAD situation with Venezuelan Chavez and Subs....It's yet ANOTHER reason we need to become much more energy independent! Will our folks continue to dither while Chavez buys the submarines ...????

Venezuela Goes Shopping for Submarines
by James Dunnigan

Strategy Page

President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela has caused quite a bit of heartburn in the region because of his leftist politics. Chavez has become quite chummy with communist dictator Fidel Castro of Cuba, and is now taking a page from the Cold War playbook by turning to Russia for weapons. Unlike Cuba, Venezuela has lots of oil money, and the Russians are eagerly offering Chavez just about anything he wants. Chavez wants three more submarines, and the Russians are hot to find export customers for their new Lada (replacement form the Kilo) diesel electric boats.

Interesting development, yes it is bad news, and the subs would represent a threat to a portion of our surface fleet.

We can counteract the threat though, just another reason we need to keep developing the new Virginia class submarines. Progress never ends, we are far ahead of these diesel subs when matched against one of our 688 class boats, but we need to keep pushing the envelope in new designs. Tom Clancy's look at the force in Hunt for Red October is not that far off the mark today.

Oh, res- AIP equipped subs are believed to be a bigger threat to American warships than nuclear subs, especially in coastal waters.

My response, (high pitched voice) "BUUULLLSHIIIIT!". ;-)

The term "quiet submarine" is going to have to be redefined with Virginia class. Just an amazing engineering feat to make a sub this quiet.
