ElM, it's funny how people mix up their language with their identity and think of their language as something wondrous and immutable but it's just a bunch of chimpoid grunts bearing some relationship to reality.

Maoris are struggling to keep their stone age useless language going. They didn't even have a written form, and of course the theory of relativity written in Maori is of little interest. It's good for some tourist dollars and to get ahead in the nanny-state politically-correct culture we are suffering, but other than that, it doesn't have a lot going for it.

I'm sure there will be a globalizing attack on English/American at some stage to make it a reasonable lingua franca. It's already underway. Unlike the "keep French pure" campaigns and the like, English is happy to hijack anything which aids communication.

It's just a tool, though some pedants still try to keep it pure. As long as the apostrophe's are in the right place, I'm relaxed about it.

Elmataodor,

You are contradicting yourself. Urdu is an Indian language.

>only guaranteed to survive in 500 years: English, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish and India language.>

>A stupid language like Bahasa Indonesia, Igbo, Urdu used in a stupid environment, will produce stupid people.>

>It is the availability of stuff written and published in English that makes English a clever language. My mother tongue is Portuguese. When I read something technical in Portuguese I laugh. The conciseness of English for technical stuff is wonderful.>

There are many languages that have as much versatility as English to express scientific or artistic thought. The advantage of English (the advantage does exist) is just the result of the domination of US and UK over the last two centuries. Now you can use the argument that the domination of US and UK has been because of the language they speak. That may be a wrong conclusion. Other factors such as the political systems, justice systems, financial systems, and independent institutions are more important than language. North Koreans and South Koreans speak the same language. East Germans and West Germans speak the same language. North Indians and Pakistanis speak the same languages.
