The URL you posted was to a site that allows people to submit Quotes. It is not like an authoritative site like Bartletts that actually research what they publish. The man who submitted the quote to them was a fella from India. He obviously got the quote from errant internet mentions. You will not find it in any text about Thomas Jefferson. The quote first appeared as a statement by Howard Zinn while being interviewed on the Thomas Paine website. It was his own statement, not a quote of Jefferson. It is an Urban Myth.

Does talking about the state of the nation today under Bush improve our lives today? If we care about honesty, bottom line, we care about who said what, even when, at times. It's good for the thread, if the thread is to have lasting meaning, IMHO. Re: "Very petty of you and others" Plainly, I think not. What interests me is the implication that you had a link quoting Jefferson just as you quoted him. This would mean perhaps you honestly thought Jefferson said it, if he did not. That's good. It is not petty to expect folks to openly discuss and correct errors, nor to roundly criticize them when they do not. Without that process, there is no progress toward truth, and sometimes there may be reverse progress as untold waters get muddied by having left the incorrect stand. It's also interesting that it seems I was wrong to think the previous versions of the thread header were all available. I thought they always were for any thread. I guess I was wrong, cause I see no way to access the prior versions of the header right now!?! Dan B.
