09:04 DELL Dell: Using AMD processors makes a lot of sense; risk-reward remains favorable - Amtech (30.31 )

Amtech notes that there has been recent renewed speculation that DELL could use OEM processors from AMD. Based on checks, they believe there is truth to this with DELL building working prototypes. While they say exact timing is not clear, they believe sometime in 2006 is very possible. Firm would view such a move as positive for DELL and negative for HPQ and IBM. They believe offering AMD's Opteron would fill in a hole in DELL's enterprise product line with superior performance-per-watt; and believe DELL would greatly eliminate the competitive technology differentiator that HPQ, IBM, and to a lesser degree SUNW, enjoy in offering AMD processors.
