Research in Motion will hire up to 1,200 people over the next five years to staff a technical support centre it plans to open in Halifax.

The company (TSX:RIM) said the centre is slated to open in 2006.

The government of Nova Scotia is giving RIM up to $14 million in payroll rebates and a $5-million financial package including recruitment and training incentives.

Based in Waterloo, Ont., RIM is the maker of the popular BlackBerry wireless communications device.

Research in Motion co-CEO Jim Balsillie said the firm had originally decided to locate the support centre in the U.S. But he said a visit to Waterloo last month by a team from Nova Scotia, led by premier John Hamm, persuaded them to locate in Halifax instead.

Hiring will begin in January for the first 250 jobs, which will pay an average of more than $45,000 a year.

Earlier this week, RIM scaled back its BlackBerry subscriber growth estimates for the third and fourth quarters of the year due to delays in launching a couple of new versions of the device.
