By Islamism I mean neither Islam nor Arab nationalism, but the political philosophy espoused by Sayyid Qutb and Ahman al Zawahiri: a kind of totalitarian Shari'a, best thought of as fascism wrapped in the green flag of Islam.

It's been around for a long time, ever since the Nazis wooed the Arab world so effectively in the 1930s. Hatred of West, born of a sense of baffling inferiority (baffling since Allah told them they were superior), has been around even longer.

The Arabs have spent the 20th century picking up fascism, and Pan-Arab socialism. Both causes are massive failures. Now the Islamists are pushing religious fascism. We are trying to create some space to push democracy and free markets instead.

Since you don't understand what we're fighting, it's no surprise that you don't understand why we're fighting.
