Chris, "reserves" is one word being used with two meanings in this case. Of course there is finite oil, but reserves can increase because reserves are oil which has been discovered, quantified and is accessible using current technology. Shell got into trouble for claiming reserves which were not really reserves in a proper accounting sense.

Reserves do go up as more oil is found. When prices go up, more drilling is done and more reserves are created.

It's just language. Agreeing on what words mean is always a good idea in a discussion.
