The best book I ever read on the start of the war in the Pacific was "But Not In Shame" by John Toland. It goes from before Pearl Harbor to Midway. An excellent book that might surprise you. Published in 1961 (long before the current politicalization of history) with many eyewitness accounts. Weapons were the least of our problems at the beginning of the Pacific War.
