Yes he did. HIs mistake is that he rushed into it without a plan and support from the major nations. HIs mistake is that America could do it all alone.

There are certain values that we uphold and torture is not one of them. Would someone die to uphold values or would you rather destroy values to save lives.

History is replete with instances where people have lost their lives to uphold values. That is why they call it a sacrifice.
