Amelia Peabody Emerson? I have read all her books and simply adore them. The very first - Crocodile on the Sandbank - is hilarious. Elizabeth Peters is the pen name of Barbara Mertz who obtained her PhD in Egyptology at the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago. She wrote 2 books on Egyptology under her real name: Temples,Tombs and Heiroglyphs followed by Red Land, Black Land. She is a very entertaining author. She also writes under the pen name Barbara Michaels. She likes cats.
