this piece from Slate

Don't be too impressed. Those statistics are terribly flawed.

The writer used the 1966 end strength of 385,000 for the entire year.

The beginning of the year 1966 strength was more like 185,000.

My first thought was, **there** are two people who have nothing to do. The next thought was if they were going to write such an article, at the least, they could compare apples to apples...etc.

For instance, go back to the Rev. War. Check the number of total white men in the country at the time. (Unfortunately, there was no accurate count of the Native American population at that time.) Next check the number of soon-to-be-Americans that were killed in action. Next, check the approximate number of POW's that were killed and that died on the British ships. (You will find that there were more than 3+ times the number killed on the ships, than were killed on the battlefield.) But killed they were. Then compare the percentages of the total white population versus the number of killed and killed as POW's....

Then do that for every war.

Including the current Iraq war.

Then they could factor the medical and military changes AFTER they had the first set of numbers, as the military changes and medical changes are only estimates.

One has to ask why these guys didn't do that....Do you think they had an agenda?
