You were (apparently) talking about a particular U.S. law. My comment was from a more general perspective as I am not involved in American issues to the same degree that you are. My "There are some weapons that ought reasonably to be prohibited to the general public--and in particular to children, retards, prisoners, and politicians" seems to correspond with your "It is quite possible for their to be desirable, rational, and constitutional regulations against owning certain weapons."

Now....we both agree that it is possible to have "desirable" and "rational" regulations against owning certain weapons. So whether you categorise those weapons under the family of "assault weapons" or some such other grouping--we both see the desirability of regulating ownership of such weapons.
