I can't believe this country is still arguing about birth control and abortion rights

That's what happens when issues are taken out of the hands of the voters and mandated by fiat by 9 people. Had the Supreme Court stayed out of the abortion issue it would have been a subject in virtually every state election from 1973 to present, and abortion regulation laws would likely match the will of the people. Instead, there is no discussion on abortion regulation laws because such laws have been deemed unconstitutional by 9 people back in 1973.

fringe cases are taking control of this country.

Fringe case? If you think abortion is a fringe case perhaps you should consider why you are so adamantly in support of it. Fringe cases usually involve topics nobody cares about.

This country is getting nuttier by the minute. Any thoughts as to why?

Because there have been a series of mistakes[?] and events that have conspired to cause a revival in religious fundamentalism and in what are called conservative values. Unbeknownst to many of us, it started when 'the Southern Dixiecrats' jumped to the GOP; then came Roe vs Wade, Title IX, feminism and AA. Reagan tried to stop the movement for equality in the 1980s and failed. Meanwhile, the neocon movement was picking up speed just as the GOP become a much more national party and was organizing in a way never done previously.

The ultimate affront to the GOP and the people opposed to the direction the country was heading where women and people of color were given equal opportunity to participate was the rise to power of Bill and Hillary Clinton. Here were two very bright people who were accomplishing a good portion of the Dem. agenda without stealing; were balancing the budget; reducing military operations and introducing the country to its longest period of prosperity in modern history.

Had Bill Clinton not misstepped, IMO this country would not be ruled by a Bush. Unfortunately, he did and it gave his enemies all the fuel they needed. Good people who supported Clinton became confused.......seemingly all the good he had accomplished was wiped out by a BJ. For political reasons, Gore stupidly divorced himself from Clinton......I think that was a mistake........it gave credence to what Clinton's enemies were saying. Nonetheless, the election proved to be very close.

Frankly, I don't think Bush won in FLA.......and I think that Bush and company knew it. That's why they ran to the USSC.........a move orchestrated in concert by Scalia and Rove. In recent history, we had not had such a close election and that allowed the GOP to begin the first in a series of scare campaigns. They said the gov't could not go on indefinitely without a president; that we didn't have the luxury of a recount. It worked......people became afraid; afraid that are our gov't would stop functioning. Of course, if you had read the Constitution, you would know that the FF had provided for such an event and we were in fine shape. At a minimum, there should have been a full recount of the vote in FLA. The GOP demanded no less in the last close election here in WA state.

In any case, Gore did not have the necessary support he needed and capitulated. Bush ascended to power. In 2000, if you and I met Bush, I suspect we both would conclude he was disturbed mentally. IMO that condition has worsened in the past 5 years. Meanwhile, Bush took the 2000 election as his mandate to undo all the good Clinton had done. 9/11 helped him to speed up the process of implementing his agenda while good Americans stoodby either confused or wringing their hands. So much damage has been done its frightening.

And no mistake they are hellbent in turning over Roe vs Wade and anything else that smacks of equal rights for all. The facts mean nothing to them. Its all about maintaining power and protecting the status quo. And its important to see this in historical context. The events and mistakes [?] that allowed them to rise to power are real and unfortunate but their agenda always has been the same. Inspite of all the rhetoric, their commitment to democracy is vague with little depth. Americans need to pay attention and demand that they do what we want and not what they want. Its a serious battle that we ignore at our own peril.

I can't believe this country is still arguing about birth control and abortion rights - fringe cases are taking control of this country. Most people my age would prefer if the BabyBoomer-controlled-Congress could kindly move on to the next top for women's rights (rather than being stuck in the 60s and 50s) - which is their right to have children and work without abandoning them - something that really rubs Gen X and Gen Ys. The bottom-line is, Congressional men need to keep their noses out of restricting women's rights, and instead focus on supporting those rights.

The problem is there is an element of the people who never endorsed Roe vs Wade or anything else that smacks of leveling the playing field for one and all.

If this were a Hollywood movie, it would be depicted as the battle between good and evil. Its an oversimplification but in those movies, the most religious are the ones most evil. Hollywood may be facile but it knows of what it speaks.
