09:10 NAND Industry: Positive Initial Black Friday Data - A good start to the holiday season -- WR Hambrecht

WR Hambrecht notes they conducted Black Friday holiday channel checks in the NAND flash sector which has stock implications on SanDisk (SNDK), M-systems (FLSH), Lexar Media (LEXR), and Silicon Motion (SIMO). The firm has come up with the following data points: 1) SanDisk was very aggressive in its price cuts in all of its major retail outlets. In addition, the firm has noticed few marketing campaigns on its USB flash drive line; 2) PNY was a positive surprise in its aggressive pricing in USB flash drives and in its broad retail presence which clearly stands out compared to competition; 3) Lexar Media prices were not competitive though it is part of its new business model not to chase price wars; 4) M-systems benefited from USB strength at Kingston and Memorex; 5) overall, the firm's channel checks have indicated that the holiday season has started on the right foot for flash cards and USB drives as the firm had expected.

[Harry: This is now a commodity business anyway you look at it. Being number one in a lousy business segment is still a lousy business. I don't see any long term traction here. It is like the modem business of not that many years ago. US Robotics used to be
king, now they are just a minor division of bigger company that is
struggling to find the new big thing. The lesson in technology stocks is not to stay too long. I expect GOOG to suffer the same fate unless they continue to stay ahead of the innovation curve and develop new markets sooner that their old ones get commoditized]
