New Jersey: A federal inquiry of Camden, NJ’s poorest city turns up more trouble. The past mayor, Angelo J. Errichetti was convicted of federal corruption charges of corruption in 1981. The immediately past mayor Arnold B. Webster pleaded guilty to wire fraud in 1998 and was sentenced. The current Democratic party mayor Mr. Milan is city’s first Hispanic mayor. His business partner in Atlas Construction Co., Gholam Joseph Darakshan was indicted in early March 2K on charges of laundering drug money with the mayor. They allegedly borrowed $65,000 in drug money and used friends to break it up to evade federal threshold for reporting cash deposits. Mr. Milan allegedly accepted bribes in exchange for city contracts that benefited Mr. Natale who is in prison for narcotics conspiracy. The indictment alleges that the mayor accepted 2 vehicles from a towing operator and a second contractor performed demolition worth $4,000 and installed $700 worth of carpet in mayor’s home. A third contractor installed 25 new windows in mayor’s home to get speedier payment from Camden Housing Services Dept. In fourth count an air conditioner worth $3,346 was installed in mayor’s home. There was also a case of vacation in Florida with his girlfriend paid for by bribe money. Robert J. Cleary of US attorney for NJ said there was a pay-for-play bribing system. Renee M. Bumb is a lead prosecutor. City’s former municipal prosecutor Joseph S. Caruso was also admitted to conspiring with the mayor to solicit a $5000 campaign donation, which forms one of the counts.
