SENATOR INVESTIGATED FOR CORRUPTION IN CAMPAIGN FINANCING. Senator Bob Toricelli, D-N.J., and 2000 Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman, is being investigated by federal prosecutors following allegations he accepted both personal gifts and illegal campaign funds from South Korean, David Chang, a millionaire commodities broker, in return for political favors. Toricelli joins three of his campaign staff who also face indictment, and seven donors have pleaded guilty to making illegal contributions to his 1996 senate campaign. David Chang has pleaded guilty to illegally contributing $53,700 to Toricelli’s campaign and faces a prison sentence. (Salon, Apr 25, 2001, summary by Marg Reynolds).
