If the goal of people seeking same-sex marriage is to afford themselves benefits currently allowed only to those in a traditional marriage, why not incorporate or form some other such legally recognized relationship? Would that not give them most (if not all) of what they seek?

That's not their only goal. Nor even, I think, their primary goal. Their primary goal, as I understand it, is to gain full acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle as fully equal to the heterosexual lifestyle. They want not only equality of rights but identicality of respect.

They want not just legal equality, but social equality. They are not satisfied with the same rights as married people have but under a different name; they want the name itself, too. Nothing less will do.

"Domestic partnership" is recognized in a number of states and confers what you discuss. I think Philosopher got this right. It has not proven adequate.
