Thanks Mish for your outstanding, and I think accurate assessment of the Iraq situation.
I agree with you and Heinz -- it's best to get out as expeditiously as possible, and of course van Creveld is right: an orderly retreat would be by far the best plan. Won't happen, though. Too much vanity and stupidity in Washington. Too much insulation still from the consequences of the war.

My only point of disagreement with the van Creveld piece is the historical precedent. Augustus sending his legions into Germany was stupid but not dire. Centuries were to pass before Germanic peoples broke through in a serious way into the Roman world.

The more accurate analogy -- or let me put it this way, the possibly more accurate precedent --- is the expedition that Alcibiades convinced the Athenians to launch against Syracuse (on the island of Sicily), a disaster from which Athens NEVER recovered.

There is one serious repercussion to withdrawing from Iraq before the country is stable: No one will ever take the US military seriously again. We will be seen as toothless cowards by every third world dictator in the world. Between Iraq and Vietnam we will have shown them that we talk tough but when things actually do get tough Americans cut and run. All a country has to do is disperse it's troops as we are building up and then attack our troops terrorist style.

Leaving may be the smartest thing to do with Iraq but it is by far the dumbest thing this country can do if we want our military threats to be taken seriously in the future. As for the 2000 plus military deaths being touted by the press, that's chicken feed even if it was for one year (it's for the entire occupation). It really is. Look at how many people get killed by drunk drivers each year, how many people are murdered in Washington DC each year, or how many people die from almost any cause. While the press doesn't talk about any of that, they preach endlessly about one of the most important issues of our time.

We need to get out of Iraq but leaving before the Iraqi government is stable is so foolish that I am surprised anyone is even discussing it.
