With long supply lines, it is easier to "defend" at home than adventuring into foreign hostile countries with zero support for the invasion. Did Adolf really think he could occupy the USSR? He seemed to be a megalomaniac, like Islamic Jihad.

Oh absolutely... Both Hitler and Stalin were megalo-maniacs..

The difference is that Hitler was close to success, when he made some terrible strategic decisions (by diverting Army Group Central to surround the Russian forces in the Kiev Pocket.) The delays cost the Germans precious weeks of time and quantities of supplies that would have been better spent taking the strategic rail networks surrounding Moscow.

Another failure was the Nazi failure to take into the account the rail gauge differences between European and Russian railroads. It required the Germans to off-load their European Railcars and reload the cargo on Russian Gauge rail cars.
