I agree, unfortunately, MM. There are so many people who are so self-centered, and that don't consider anyone but themselves. So very sad.

Can't fathom what "flower children" (by which I assume you mean hippies) have to do with this.

I was a hippie myself back in the day. Aside from smoking dope, not wearing a bra or a girdle and not rolling my hair on curlers but letting it hang straight, it seems to me that the essence of being a hippie was being kind and compassionate to others.

Because that was the way that the hippies I knew acted.

I know it's commonly said that they were selfish and self-centered and so forth, but I never understood why.

There was a recent article about some old style hippies who set up a crisis relief center in New Orleans for displaced people and volunteers and now the residents want them to move on. If I find it I'll post it.
