French Doctors Perform World's First Partial Face Transplant

POSTED: 10:10 am CST November 30, 2005

LYON, France -- Doctors in France said a woman is in "excellent" condition after getting the world's first partial face transplant.

Doctors grafted another person's nose, lips and chin onto the woman, who had been disfigured by a dog bite in May.

A statement from two French hospitals said the 38-year-old had the transplant on Sunday. The hospitals said the transplants look "normal."

The statement said the transplanted parts came from a donor who was brain dead.

Experts say the mouth and nose are the most difficult parts of the face to transplant.
