Although they are "giving away still more free software", I agree with the approach. It really is all about volume. If you can build that large base (eg. Microsoft, Google, Yahoo) you can be successful. I listened to the "Red October" web cast and feel Jonathon is right. Although there may be millions of downloads for "free", no business who cares about support, availability and uptime will deploy these products in a mission critical environment without having proper support from Sun. And that's the revenue hook/angle. But by making the software freely available to developers it allows them to evaluate it at no cost. What a great way to get exposure and undoubtedly more deployments and thus revenue.
