The Able Danger investigation had already pegged Mohammed Atta as readying a hijacking for the end of summer. Officials such as John Ashcroft refused to fly commercial planes because he knew a hijacking was immenent. The air defense of the U.S. became scarce to non-existent especially on the east coast. The hijacking came, and Cheney was able to identify the hijackers in hours even as Bush was being flown out for a new change of underwear. Events unfolded just as they planned, except 9/11 was a bit bigger than they needed. They stood down for a simple hijacking hostage situation and got 9/11, which threated to be a distraction from the invasion of Iraq. TP
