The rink a block from our house is always in use all winter. We even have our own Zamboni.

warming houses and attendants. not in my neighborhood. we did have one or two public places, but it was water on a common or play ground , no facilities.
we would climb over a security fence at G.E. run across rr tracks, climb over another ge security fence then we would be in marsh , sea water and rain water frozen over. bullrushes about ten feet high.. some great clearings . that was were we did some great ice hockey. one kid almost got hit by a bud train walking the tracks back it was during the commuter time 5pm train out of boston to north shore.. ten minutes later after we slowed the train down and it missed the kid we had about four cops cars looking for us. We dropped the marsh for ice skating on ge land . g
