No, I wasn't being flip about Taiwan. But I was being flip about "nobless oblige", though only in part really as I do think those with energy and talent to spare lift up and protect and give opportunity to those who don't. <Were you being flip with taiwan and nobless oblige? Small states like taiwan, israel, kuwait, kurdistan neednt be swallowed up by militaristic regimes in the name of nationalism.>

For example, Dr Jacobs and the highly talented people at QUALCOMM have uplifted my blighted existence and limited talent. By doing so, they benefit themselves as well as we the benighted masses.

I pay a LOT of taxes to the USA and a LOT of it goes to a huge military system which I do not expect to just roar around the oceans deafening the cetaceans and churning up the water. The purpose of the military system as far as I am concerned is to defend the likes of Taiwan, Japan, sea lanes and commons, and to protect me and mine and our investments against thieves, vagabonds and megalomaniacs. Also to act with a yet to exist New United Nations to ensure civilization among nations.
