I don't think Richard Reid, or the woman who failed to blow up the wedding party in Jordan, or any of the other terrorists I've read about, would have become the government anywhere. But the Afghan Talibs did. And they still haven't given up. Not too many of Lenin's bolsheviks or Hitlers brownshirts were thought - by most people - to be government material... until after they took power. We, humans, love Great Revolutionary Movements! If we can't have a proper (quasi-)secular Big Idea, we'll settle for an old-fashioned religious one.... ;)
