"Maybe if Stalin had allied with France and Britain in opposing the Nazi invasion of Poland, instead of conspiring with Hitler to carve the poor country up between them, there WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN a WWII in the first place"

Quite possible. But, he didn't.

"Including the 15,000 Polish officers who were imprisoned, and after failed attempts to "re-educate" them, were massacred and buried in mass graves in the Katyn Forest, and elsewhere in the Soviet Union"

Both Germany and Russia did that sort of stuff. That is why we had the white hats, the Nazis had the black hats, and the Reds had the red hats. We had white hats then.

"So what was that you were saying about Russia's critical role in fighting Nazi Germany??"

Not much; just this...

The Eastern Front was by far the largest and bloodiest theatre of World War II, and indeed has little parallel in the history of human conflict. It involved more land combat than all other World War II theatres combined. The Red Army and other forces of the USSR inflicted about 80% of losses - about 3 million men - suffered by German land forces (Germany's strongest armed force comprised of the Heer and the Waffen-SS) in World War II. The USSR, for its part, lost as many as 27 million lives. Also, the invasion of areas of the East was a motivated by a powerful anti-Slavic bigotry on the part of the Nazis which was not paralleled on the Western Front, resulting in tremendous brutality
