<"They were nearly all gung ho for attacking Saddam."

I'm not sure who "they" are!
>

In that case, "they" was the electorate. It also included the politicians.

<The chimpistration makes it's own reality, and then remakes it, constantly, as actual reality juts in.>

Those in the "reality-based" community react to the reality that those imaginative ones who create reality for others to react to, like Donald Rumsfeld. Unfortunately such imaginative "reality-creating" people tend to create realities in their own heads which cannot be translated to reality in reality. It's called fantasy. Literature is full of fantasists. So are the cemeteries. Adolf had his fantasy of a 1000 Year Reich. It's not just religious cranks who build such fantasies.

In general, that's why religious people are so dangerous. They are accustomed to creating "real" fantasies in their minds for which there is no evidence and no matter if there is contrary evidence [such as competing religions saying the opposite, or the deity deliberately wrecks their meeting house].

King George II is a born-again believer that he has the biggest, baddest, deity on the planet on his side and that he has a hotline direct to the great one. Any normal person says "oh dear" when they realize he's on such a trip. That's just David Koresh writ large and armed with noocular bombs, though their attitude to girls is a bit different and also the technical details of their beliefs. Similarly, Osama, Omar and co have their own hot-lines, fantasy-based realities and so on, again, involving them in charge of everyone.

Welcome to the dark ages.
