ha ha... welcome to the club... I hear 73% of Canadians polled do not expect politicians to keep their election promises....

perhaps it's just that we have a very "realistic" view of things --
and this is due to several factors.

for one, i believe that our Canuck form of comedy and satire
has a lot to do with how we regard politics and politicians.

THH22M, Rick Mercer, The Great Canadian Air Farce
and many other of our shows really skewer Canadian politics
and there is little that is considered out of bounds.

much the same applies to our news coverage.
i think we're much more analytical and even somewhat
vicious in our coverage of Canadian (and world) politics.

also, i think it's great that we have things like
"question period" in the House of Commons, and that
debates have been televised for many years, and that
anyone could sit up in the gallery to watch the daily
goings-on...
and also, that politicians have to face the Scrum of
reporters as they come and go from parliament -- makes
for some sharp, tough questions. (also kept Chretien
in great shape as he tore up the stairs 2 or 3 at a time
to try to outrun the reporters). <g>

at the same time, i think we basically like
our politicians, but we certainly don't worship them
or think they're above the rest of us in any way.

all of that seems to me to be a good thing.
i hope things don't change anytime soon.
