The media SHOULD be skeptical, even to the point of hostility, of power. It would be ok if they displayed equal hostility to the loyal opposition. They don't. They actively support that side. And a considerable amount of power resides there.

The badgering, disrespectfull preachiness of reporters asking questions is incredible. I don't think I have ever seen such open hostility towards any Administration's officials.

A strong president can call them on it. Bush's numbers are so weak that if he personally attacks the media it will sound like whining.

If we get a Republican president elected in 08, he should have Bush move the WH press corp across the street to new quarters before he even moves in. Then, in his first month in office, have a dinner meeting at the WH with the top exec and the number one editor/manager of the media networks plus the NYT, the AP and the WaPo.

At this meeting he should review the way he was treated by them during the election and talk about the difference in his election numbers compared to the split against him in the media. Then tell them that he is setting up a WH team to come after them on a daily basis for their biased reporting. And tell them that he will take this to the people himself in an attack on the media.

He could then explain that the way out of this mess they have got themselves into is to balance their newsrooms. If they don't, they have no one to blame but themselves for the way the public is going to treat them when he gets through.
