<<Does that work even when the old battery is dead?>>

No, when they die it's all lost. It works when your battery is old and sick and they replace it but not dead.

I had an old widow living across the road who'd call me when her battery was dead, she couldn't lift the hood to hook up the charger. Always at night and I'd check the water, hook up the charger and unhook it about 5am the next day. One night I looked at the battery and the thing was 11 years old. I took her down the next day for a new battery. Odd thing was she was worth millions but $50 for a new battery was out of her price range.
