>>In other words, it requires the very skill set that would generally prevent a person from making such an inane claim in the first place.<<

I'm not sure I'm following you. Do you not recognize the Bush statement as over the top?

This article is very much about creating an association in people's minds. Criticism of Bush is to be associated with extreme hyperbole and therefore unworthy of reasoned consideration. Once the linkage is made, a refutation on hyperbole becomes a refutation of Bush critics by association.

It's not criticism of Bush that is unworthy of reasoned consideration. It is hyperbolic statements against Bush that are unworthy of reasoned consideration.

I'm on record on another thread a couple of years ago as stating that I was beginning to think that Bush might just be the most disappointing president of my lifetime in terms of having done the most damage and in terms of acting contrary to my wishes. There was an extensive discussion during which I shared my rationale. My statement was not hyperbolic because I was clearly expressing it as my opinion, not fact, it was not absolute, and I could provide a rationale for it. FWIW, I'm pretty sure now, two years later, that I was on the right track. IMO he's lapped Carter. But I would never assert that Bush is the worst president ever for the reasons stated by this author.

BTW, I agree with everyone who said that was an unfortunate example of hyperbole, at least for our purposes.
