General Odom Calls for Immediate Exit from Iraq
_____________________________________________________________

United Press International

Friday 02 December 2005

Washington - The US general who used to head the National Security Agency says the only way to stabilize the Middle East is to leave Iraq.

Retired three star Lt. Gen. William Odom, writing for NiemanWatchdog.org, wrote that while President George W. Bush wants to bring democracy and stability to the Middle East, the only way to achieve that goal is for the US armed forces to get out of Iraq now.

Odom, one of the most respected US military analysts and a prominent figure at the conservative Hudson Institute in Washington, wrote, "We have seen most of our allies stand aside and engage in Schadenfreude over our painful bog-down in Iraq. Winston Churchill's glib observation, 'the only thing worse that having allies is having none,' was once again vindicated.

"There is no chance that our allies will join us in Iraq," he wrote. "... Iraq is the worst place to fight a battle for regional stability. Whose interests were best served by the US invasion of Iraq in the first place? It turns out that Iran and al-Qaida benefited the most, and that continues to be true every day US forces remain there."

Neocons 'R' Bushed: The Final Days of the PNAC Cabal

by Ingmar Lee*
December 2, 2005
dissidentvoice.org

On November 30, an exhausted looking George Bush, "Commander-in Chief," strutted up to the faux-riveted, banner-emblazoned and Hitleresque war-stump and dictated his latest "Plan for Victory" in Iraq. Apparently, the crotch-strapped President's famous "Mission Accomplished" victory declaration was a little premature because the slaughtering work of spreading freedom in Iraq will not end on his watch without "complete victory." So Bush was back before his favorite audience, this time a fawning full-house of sworn-allegiance, duty-bound, invite-only Naval Academy midshipmen, to explain to the increasingly disgruntled “Land of the Free” how he intends to prosecute his on-going atrocity in Iraq.

In all of America, Bush could not have chosen a less critical, more muzzled and gullible crowd to peddle his pullout from the quagmire. No embarrassing outbursts from this plebeian crowd, only rapturous ovation on every cue. Nevertheless, Bush stumbled immediately by pointing out the military record of his Neocon crony, Rubberstamp Rumsfeld, who was sitting in the audience. This only emphasized to everyone the chickenhawk President's own sorry AWOL military desertion and his "VEEP-for-torture's" five deferments. The cowardly hypocrisy of it all hung in the mind's eye for the duration of the oration. One wonders what went through the minds of the midshipmen, whose "Honor Concept" code of ethics states that "Midshipmen are persons of integrity: who stand for that which is right. They tell the truth and ensure that the full truth is known. They do not lie, cheat or steal." What were they thinking, these future torturers, cluster-bombers, DU and Willy Pete dispensers, as they listened to, and dutifully applauded their Commander-in-Chief?

Here's the nutcase "Plan for Victory" in a nutshell (with emphasis):

1) "... To all who wear the uniform, I make you this pledge: America will not run in the face of car bombers and assassins so long as I am your Commander-in-Chief..." (Applause.)

2) "... We will never back down. We will never give in. And we will never accept anything less than complete victory..." (Applause.)

3) "... And as the Iraqi security forces stand up, coalition forces can stand down -- and when our mission of defeating the terrorists in Iraq is complete, our troops will return home to a proud nation..." (Applause.)

1 and 2 we've already heard ad nauseum, so lets have a look at the standing up and standing down business. Here's a bit of recent history to set the context for Bush's latest brainwave:

Apr. 5, 2004 "... Suddenly the Iraqi Civil Defense Corps (ICDC), a paramilitary force trained by the Americans, turned on the US soldiers and started to shoot at them instead .The Americans fled their vehicles and began to battle both the Mehdi Army of Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and the ICDC members. Their vehicles were set ablaze..."

Nov. 8, 2004 "... Iraqi battalions fighting alongside Americans during the assault of Fallujah suffered mass desertions. One Iraqi battalion was reduced from 500 men down to 170 -- with 255 members quitting over one weekend..."

Dec. 21, 2004 "... Nineteen US soldiers were killed in a suicide attack inside a massively fortified US military base in Mosul. George W Bush offered his condolences but stressed that troops had a vital mission of peace in Iraq..."

Aug. 8, 2005. "... Iraqi soldiers being trained by US troops inside Taji military base, are afraid to set foot outside.” We’re all afraid. I can't go outside the base wearing these military clothes." "We all know soldiers who notice people photographing them with mobile phones and being followed," said a Shiite Muslim from Amara..."

Sept. 29, 2005 "... The number of Iraqi battalions capable of combat without U.S. support has dropped from three to one, the top American commander in Iraq, Gen. George Casey, told Congress Thursday, prompting Republicans to question whether U.S. troops will be able to withdraw next year..."

Oct. 03, 2005 "... The Senate heard testimony from America's generals, including top General George Casey, that only 1 out of 119 Iraqi army and security battalions are able to operate in combat situations without U.S. military backup. The generals' testimony meant that after two and a half years of U.S. efforts, only 750 men out of 200,000 can be relied upon to operate and obey orders independently in combat situations..."

But according to Bush's Plan for Victory, just two months later:

"... Now, there are over 120 Iraqi Army and Police combat battalions in the fight against the terrorists -- typically comprised of between 350 and 800 Iraqi forces. Of these, about 80 Iraqi battalions are fighting side by side with coalition forces, and about 40 others are taking the lead in the fight. Most of these 40 battalions are controlling their own battle space, and conducting their own operations against the terrorists with some coalition support -- and they're helping to turn the tide of this struggle in freedom's favor. America and our troops are proud to stand with the brave Iraqi fighters." (Applause.)

Are Americans going to buy this latest Bush bullshit? In Bush's simple mind, Iraqi and American GI's will soon be hobnobbing, chowin' down burgers and sippin’ brewskis like buds as they rampage around Iraq together. Newly befriended freedom-fighting troops will be hangin' poolside down at Saddam's palace and doing some fishing in the custom-built and stocked manmade lakes, before marauding out on patrol to go shoot up some rag-head terrorists. Iraq will then blossom into freedom and democracy, the oil-spigot will be cranked on full bore, the glorious troops will come home and we'll get yet another "Mission Accomplished" extravaganza.

Readers are reminded that America's dreadful blunder into Iraq represents a major plank in the shameless Weltanschauung of the Project for a New American Century (PNAC) global-domination scheme. Here are PNAC's guiding principles, set out in 1997:

* we need to increase defense spending significantly if we are to carry out our global responsibilities today and modernize our armed forces for the future;

* we need to strengthen our ties to democratic allies and to challenge regimes hostile to our interests and values;

* we need to promote the cause of political and economic freedom abroad;

* we need to accept responsibility for America's unique role in preserving and extending an international order friendly to our security, our prosperity, and our principles.

The Neocons conclude with "Such a Reaganite policy of military strength and moral clarity may not be fashionable today. But it is necessary if the United States is to build on the successes of this past century and to ensure our security and our greatness in the next."

PNAC is comprised of many familiar faces in the Bush regime incuding Elliott Abrams, John Bolton, Jeb Bush, Linda Chavez, Dick Cheney, Zalmay Khalilzad, Charles Krauthammer, William Kristol, I. Lewis Libby, Clifford May, Richard Perle, Daniel Pipes, Dan Quayle, Donald Rumsfeld, William Schneider Jr., Paul Wolfowitz and Robert B. Zoellick, to name a few of its brightest lights.

This is the sneering, war-mongering, world-domineering, power-tripping clique of the Neocon cabal, the psychopathic architects and miserable masterminds of the unwinnable Iraq catastrophe. But they've blown it, the naked stupidity of their Commander-in-Chief is exposed and America will pay. The Neocon scheme is exhausted, Bushed.

Thirty-Six Months in a Leaky Boat

By Darin Murphy*

huffingtonpost.com

12.03.2005

The growing opposition to the Iraq War has backed the Bush administration into a corner, and now their only position in the debate is to claim there isn’t one. Forget about whether or not we should’ve invaded, that ship has sailed, they argue, and Congress agreed to launch it.

The ship they sold to Congress, however, was packaged and marketed as an unsinkable Titanic with a watertight alibi, such a sure-fire success, they claimed, that it didn’t require adequate safety features or sufficient lifeboats (and if you didn’t buy it you were a terrorist lover).
After clearing its first few nautical miles, the captain and crew celebrated as though they had reached their destination ahead of schedule. Soon after, leaks sprang up everywhere and the flagship was revealed as the flimsily designed, hollow-hulled lemon that it truly is.

“Sure there are a few leaks; every ship gets ‘em”, the crew says in their defense. “But what about the places where it’s not leaking, huh? No one ever reports those!”

Captain Bush has found himself in a quandary. Turning back isn’t an option; the port from which he sailed no longer exists. He can’t abandon ship and call in the rescue team, either. Though it may save the passengers’ lives, he alienates his base, thus forfeiting his own lifeboat and committing political suicide. He has no choice, therefore, but to insist that the ship is not only still seaworthy, but close to its destination…and really far away at the same time. Meanwhile, his crew will continue pumping and patching until they can bail out in 2009.

W.'s Head in the Sand

The New York Times
Saturday 03 December 2005

In the Christmas spirit, the time has come for the reality-based community to reach out to the White House.

The Bush warriors are so deluded, they're even faking their fakery.

This week, the president presented a plan-like plan for "victory" in Iraq, which Scott McClellan rather pompously called the unclassified version of their super secret master plan. But there's no way to achieve victory from the plan even if there were a real plan. If this is what they're telling themselves in the Sit Room, we're in bigger trouble than we thought.

Talk about your unknown unknowns, as Rummy would say.

The National Strategy for Victory must have come from the same P.R. genius who gave President Top Gun the "Mission Accomplished" banner about 48 hours before the first counterinsurgency war of the 21st century broke out in Iraq.

It's not a military strategy - classified or unclassified. It's political talking points - and not even good ones. Are we really supposed to believe that anybody, even the most deeply delusional Bush sycophant, believes the phrase "Our strategy is working"?

The president talked about three neatly definable groups of insurrectionists. But, as Dexter Filkins reported in yesterday's New York Times, there are dozens, perhaps as many as a hundred, groups fighting the US Army in Iraq, and they have little, if anything, in common.

Mr. Bush's presentation claimed that the US was actually making progress in Iraq. But outside the Bush-Cheney-Rummy bubble, 10 more marines were killed by a roadside bomb outside Fallujah, for a total of 2,125 US military deaths so far.

The administration must realize it needs a real exit strategy, because it's advertising for one. The US Agency for International Development is offering more than $1 billion for anyone - anyone at all - who can come up with a plan to pacify and rebuild 10 Iraqi cities seen as vital in the war.

Maybe the White House should apply - Usaid's proffer says the "invitation is open to any type of entity."

When Bush officials weren't telling us fairy tales about the big, bad W.M.D. in Iraq, they were assuring us that the unprovoked war would be a kindness for Iraq, giving it democracy. But not only are they failing to bring democracy to Iraq, they are also degrading democracy in America as they help Iranian-backed mullahs install an Islamic republic with Saddamist torture chambers.

They've tarnished American moral leadership with illegal detentions, torture, secret CIA prisons in countries only recently liberated from the Soviet gulag, and Soviet-style propaganda both at home and in Iraq.

Guess the Bush administration didn't learn anything this fall when federal auditors charged it with violating the law by buying favorable news coverage of education polices. The administration got right back into the fake news business, paying to plant propaganda in the Iraqi press. They outsourced this disinformation campaign to something called the Lincoln Group - have they no shame?

You have to admire Scott McClellan, the president's spokesman. He kept a straight face when he called the US "a leader when it comes to promoting and advocating a free and independent media around the world." He added, "We've made our views very clear when it comes to freedom of the press."

Exceedingly clear. The Bushies don't believe in it. They disdain the whole democratic system of checks and balances.

At the Naval Academy, President Bush talked about how well the Iraqi security forces were fighting. He claimed that 40 Iraqi battalions were taking the lead in the fight against insurgents, and that in the battle of Tal Afar this year, "the assault was primarily led by Iraqi security forces - 11 Iraqi battalions backed by 5 coalition battalions providing support."

Anderson Cooper of CNN swiftly produced Time's Baghdad bureau chief, Michael Ware, who was embedded with the US military during the entire Tal Afar battle. "With the greatest respect to the president, that's completely wrong," Mr. Ware said, adding: "I was with Iraqi units right there on the front line as they were battling with al Qaeda. They were not leading."

He also told Mr. Cooper: "I have had a very senior officer here in Baghdad say to me that there's never going to be a point where these guys will be able to stand up against the insurgency on their own."

Mr. Ware recalled that in a battle two weeks ago, he saw an Iraqi security officer put down his weapon and curl up into a ball when he was under attack. "I have seen that on - on many, many occasions," he said.

Curling up in a ball. Good National Strategy for Victory.

Hi geode00; Re: "Yep, I've heard as well that the 2125 are KIA and do not include anyone who dies after leaving Iraq."

I doubt that you can name even one US serviceman who was wounded in Iraq, later died of his wounds in the US, but who wasn't listed in the official war dead.

On the other hand, you assertion that the figures "do not include anyone who dies after leaving Iraq" is clearly false. Why don't you read the casualty reports from the Pentagon and verify this? Here's where they are:
www.defenselink.mil/releases/

Here's the most recent who died after leaving Iraq (from a disease identified while in Iraq):

Pfc. Ryan D. Christensen, 22, of Spring Lake Heights, N.J., died at the Medical University of Charleston in Charleston, S.C., on Nov. 24, of a non-combat related illness identified in Balad, Iraq, on Nov. 10.
www.defenselink.mil/releases/2005/nr20051128-5165.html

Now is he listed in the KIA in Iraq? According to your claim he certainly shouldn't be. Yet he's in the Coalition Casualties website data for November 24th:
www.icasualties.org/oif/

Just because Bush is an idiot doesn't mean that everything that a lefty says is gold plated truth.

Why don't you think a little deeper about it. Don't you see that if the Pentagon were hiding casualties in the manner you're claiming the mainstream media would be all over them? All that these silly claims do is make the left wing look like idiots.
