My main objection is to unrestrained permissiveness and dependence on others for basic needs.

This has little to do with hippies and alot to do with parental laziness. BTW, many of those "hippies" you talk of in Woodstock are the capitalists of today. Bad parenting reaches across all types of people. Keep in mind the complete opposite is also true where parents aren't permissive enough to allow their children to mature properly and develop their own sense of who they are.

BTW just to keep things straight. I'm one of the last people that would think corporal punishment should be abolished. I also think that it should be done in a VERY controlled way and not abused.
