< bogged down in endless guerilla wars>

We are in garrisons there - patrols head out, day or night and then return (the lucky ones). We don't know where the insurgents are, but they know where we are...same place every day and night. Every soldier there knows that whether they agree with the purpose for being there or not. We are not set up for counter-insurgency - in Afganistan we are, using mostly Special Ops people. I'm not suggesting we should be there at all but our situation in Iraq is a total set up. We are either on a mechanized patrol or on foot - both are such easy targets for road-side devices. The huge difference today is that you can detonate a road side device with a cell phone or simple micro wave device. The explosives themselves are artillery rounds that were stolen when we invaded - they have huge supply plus they are big - artillery rounds and bombs

In Vietnam, the VC and NVA's detonating devices were mechanical...pressure release, trip wire etc. Another huge difference is you would never bring your patrol on a road unless you knew it was cleared. They guys today have an impossible job... the insurgents figure out where the patrols are headed and set up their stuff.

We have to get them out of there - Odom is the real deal - the active duty guys talk to the retired guys...it really is like family. I can't believe in my wildest dreams they have any respect for Bush - they respect the Office of the President, but not the the current Commander in Chief.

I know I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.

Going to rake leaves - it's a time during the day when I really know what I am doing.
