The power of numbers offered by unions should offer a counterbalance to the power of capital. The fact is, unions more often act as that article describes. The interests of union bosses are commonly not aligned with those of the members. And union bosses refuse to take account of the fact that foreign or non-union plants can put their employers out of business.

Many years ago, a plant I worked at was struck by its union. I was non-union professional and crossed the picket line. The plant management told the union and its members they could not meet the demands made; they were already fighting stiff foreign competition and this would put the operation in the red if the union struck and insisted on its demands. The union went ahead. The management shut down that US plant and moved operations overseas. All the workers were unumployed in a town with few other prospects.
