Telxon's customer base consisted mainly of companies that didn't want to deal with Symbol. The big beef that Walmart had with Symbol is that Symbol wasn't willing to customize their products for a customer regardless of the size of the order or willingness to pay for the engineering, Telxon was more than happy to do that. Walmart's inventory is done continually during operations. At night, all of the data is examined and projections are made with input from the managers. That data is shot up to the regional warehouses where replacement stock is pulled, put on trucks and delivered. And those warehouses are extremely sophisticated and heavily computerized. They can track every object with complete information and even the placement of material is optimized. About the only time a Walmart store runs out of an item is when something completely unusual happens or there is some snafu on delivery. In addition, they almost never have significantly too much stock, the models they use are very sophisticated. It is a beautiful machine. Of course, wireless is used extensively in both the warehouses and in the stores. Not, by the way, 802.11. They use the older 900 MHz radios. Slower data rate, only 9600 baud, but they have a longer range and the 900 MHz band isn't as object sensitive. It can penetrate walls better and doesn't suffer as much from multipath distortion and other reflections as much. Given that they mainly transfer small packets and infrequently, it is a good choice. No, Target can't beat them on this parameter. It is all to easy to have to get a rain check from Target, something that almost never happens at Walmart. But Target is a long term Symbol customer.
