But, "accepted" is too mild, they allowed him to embody them. This is the rock they break on, because the GOP is, or at least should, be greater than the narrow aspect that Dubya represents. But they doubled down on Smirk, and their hand looks weak.

Smirk may be their icon, but the corruption and bad behavior goes much deeper than smirk. GOP roots are getting their nutrients from sewerage. I have never seen so many politicians from one party at one time in some kind of legal difficulty. Someone in the GOP leadership became deluded and began to believe the GOP was invincible and that attitude found its way into some RNC pamphlets because they all act as if there is nothing to fear, not even fear itself.
