Currency, except in illegal trade, has become a very small percentage of transactions. We've been trading numbers and ledger entries for quite some time, ever since the wide acceptance of bank checks. Debit cards are simply a different form of check.

Barter is one of the least efficient forms of trade. I don't expect to go back there any more than I expect someone to suggest steam powered automobiles. Although barter did arise in Communist countries. It tends to arise in the presence of centralised price controls, it is a way for the free market to reassert itself.
