Try Nelson, on the South Island.

Good weather, good food and wine, diverse community (lots of wealthy foreigners coming in).

Of course, it's the most expensive place on the South Island, but these things are relative.

No leads, just curious. As my wife and I travelled all over for a month in 2004. Every place we went was great, but no place stuck out as a clear winner. And, for me, outside of the home prices, the Bay Area has it over almost everywhere (mountains aren't close, but my knee is useless).

Back to NZ -- Lake Wanaka or Windy Wellington (awesome windsurfing) is probably where I'd settle, but NZ is having a home bubble of its own. There is an unpopulated lake near Wanaka that's probably 1/3 price in comparison to Wanaka.
