Because private practice is more demanding. Most research conducted on actual patients (at least large clinical trials) are still conducted by MDs in the field (working at all hours, on call etc). the researchers for the most part are 9-5 ers.

Before you tell me about so and so working on a PhD spending all hours of the day in the lab, that is training, and it is also no where as rigorous as a surgical residency (5-7 years of basically no life).
