I'm glad your adventure was planned and you didn't have to spend three days remembering what the bad old days were like as I did. My toilet seat was freezing. Almost as bad as using an outhouse, which I also remember but fortunately never had to live with. I think furnaces failing right at the beginning of a weekend or holiday is one of Murphy's laws. The good news is that it wasn't the furnace, only the furnace fuse box.

Since I was a kid we always had a gas (or propane) space heater as well as central heat. When the electrictiy goes out the space heater still works and can heat at least one room. I recall several impromptu sleepovers where neighbors came to our farm because theirs was without electricity and freezing. My current space heater is in the fireplace. It's an elaborate victorian model, great for warming your back and I don't have to shovel out any ashes.
